Sawing at -18°C at the PSI in Villigen

Few weeks ago we went to Switzerland. We've been guests of Margit Schwikowski which is leading the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry (LEC) at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen. Marc Luetscher already brought there the frozen ice cores and all the samples, and together with Anja Eichler we worked for few hours in the cold room at -18°C sawing and sampling the ice cores. Now the most important phase of the work is ongoing. We collected some very nice and clean samples of CCC as well as a sort of organic colloid from the melted ice. Can't wait for results that hopefully will start to come in the next weeks. Fingers crossed also for the high resolution geochemistry we are planning on one of the CCC layers densely dissected. Our trip ended with the very interesting workshop organized by the LEC during which Marc gave a 1-hour-long outstanding presentation about the use of speleothems as high resolution tools for paleoclimate reconstructions in the Alps.
