Winter is a good season for ice-caving

Although not always easy to access, winter is probably the best season for working in ice caves. Cold conditions lead to the complete absence of water and the temperature disturbance induced by the cavers is short-lived in the cave environment.

On 31 January, 2019, we reached a cave in The Julian Alps having the entrance at 1900 m. The cave-ceiling is open and a firn-ice deposit is present at the bottom.

The ice deposit decreased about 10 m in thickness since the half 1960's and now is the time for recovering as much information as we can in order to save the remaining paleo information stored there.

We also selected this cave for a long-term monitoring capmapign and more results will coem in the future.
