Ice sampling

Over the last week end, favorauble weather and logistic conditions allowed us to organize a detailed topographic survey of one of the new ice caves we are going to work in.

Besides this ordinary activity, the Parco Naturale delle Prealpi Giulie gave us the chance of sampling the ice layers at the bottom of the cave.

This cave sector is reachable through a melting channel enriched in debris and organic matters, and it has been a further motivation to escape from really hot and anomalous weather conditions for June. Even at the end of july it would have been a very hot day, certainly unusual in June!

The fieldwork was really succesfull and we accoplishedall the planned activities.

Next fieldworks here will focus on the mass balance of the ice deposit and on trying dating this huge ice deposit
