Karnten - Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

2 days excursion 

 

​Here you can have a look to the 2016 glaciological field excursion.

 

Day 1 - glacial

We've been visiting the front of Pasterze glacier in the Grossglockner group. This is the longest valley glacier of Austria and the Eastern Alps. The glacier is undergoing an abrupt shrinkage due to increasing climate warming, leading longer and hotter summers.

Day 1-2 - periglacial

In the afternoon, hiking the Inneres Dösener Tal in the Ankoelgruppe, we had a look to some inactive and active periglacial features of mountain permafrost. After a nice dinner at the Arthur von Schmid Haus, where we overnighted, the day after we reached the front of the active Dösen rock glacier.
